Heartstrings and Tenticles

By Sophie Williams

This artwork symbolises the obsession of love, and its effect on the body. The octopus represents Takotsubo Syndrome, more commonly known as broken heart syndrome. The term 'takotsubo' is taken from the Japanese name for an octopus pot, which has a unique shape that the left ventricle comes to resemble. Because of this, I have incorporated the octopus to represent not only Takotsubo Syndrome, but the many versions that love can present itself. Afterall, Octopuses have 3 hearts.
