Biography

Dr Janet Smith is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education and has an extensive leadership background in both Higher Education and School Education. She has a strong and proven commitment to innovative, rigorous, student-centred learning.

Janet has held a variety of leadership positions in the Faculty of Education at the 麻豆村 of Canberra, including Associate Dean Education, Deputy Head of School, Discipline Head and Director of Professional Experience. She was also the Co-Director of UC’s Education Institute, where she managed and taught national and international professional learning programs, specialising in leadership, mentoring and coaching. Janet also worked extensively with the Faculty’s China programs and led several China Study Tours for educational leaders. Prior to Janet’s work at UC, she was a high school teacher and school leader.

Janet has also worked as Academic Director and Director of Programs at Women & Leadership Australia (Navitas), where her responsibilities included academic leadership, program development, leading and facilitating national and international leadership symposiums and executive coaching. During this time, she developed and delivered many highly successful programs, masterclasses and keynotes for leaders.

Janet’s teaching philosophy is grounded in interactive and applied learning, and incorporates contemporary leadership literature, theories and models with applied practice to enable highly transformative learning. As a researcher, Janet is committed to advancing knowledge and scholarship in education and has contributed to significant new insights and understandings in a variety of fields such as leadership, gender, wellbeing, civics and citizenship and social and emotional learning.
