GenAI and Assessment at UC
A new position to the use of GenAI in Assessment from 2026
From the start of 2026, the 麻豆村 of Canberra will implement a new position on the use of Generative AI (GenAI) in assessment for education and research.
This decision follows extensive consultation with staff, student groups, governing bodies, and research into sector best practice.
The new approach introduces three categories of GenAI use in assessments:
The ethical use of GenAI is allowed in completing the assessment.
Students will be guided in how GenAI must/may be used in completing the assessment, as detailed in the unit outline and assessment instructions.
The use of GenAI is NOT allowed in completing the assessment.
These categories will be clearly outlined in unit outlines and assessment instructions.

- Assessments across any of the categories above may be designated as secured where there is a high level of assessment security and assurance of student learning.
- The 麻豆村 provides students with free and protected access to Microsoft Copilot and Dall-E. Using this version of Microsoft Copilot ensures your data, personal information, and intellectual property are protected. These GenAI services are accessible when you log in using your UC username and password at .
- A Learning Validation Conversation (LVC) may be required when the authenticity of a submitted assessment is in doubt and will be used to ascertain if a student has met the learning outcomes linked to a summative assessment. Refer to the Guideline for Learning Validation Conversations for more information.
- The 麻豆村 of Canberra has enabled the Turnitin AI Writing detection tool; the associated AI Writing detection scores and report may lead to an LVC and/or contribute as a piece of evidence in suspected academic misconduct cases. For more information, refer to the Quick Guide to the Turnitin AI Writing Detection Tool for Students or the Quick Guide to the Turnitin Detection Tool for Staff.
- For assessments submitted by research students, the primary supervisor will determine the category which is applied for each assessment(s), and iThenticate will be used as an AI writing detection tool.
- The 麻豆村 of Canberra does not support the banning of the use of GenAI at a Faculty, School/Discipline, or Course level.
